Surigao Education Center is a non-sectarian, non-stock educational institution established in 1978. It was originally founded as the Surigao Medical Center School of Midwifery and officially adopted its present name on November 25, 1987, coinciding with the approval of its registration by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

These programs are duly recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), and the Department of Education (DepEd), reflecting the institution's adherence to national standards of quality and educational excellence.

SEC offers programs across five colleges and two institutes — including Allied Medical Sciences, Engineering & Architecture, Business Education, Teacher Education, Information Technology, TVET, and Maritime Education — serving students from basic education through tertiary and technical-vocational training.
